...risk? I'd be tempted to simply ride the existing equipment until she won't go no mo'. If he's concerned about getting stuck with no AC for a few days, then maybe now is the time to make a move. If you can tough it out for a bit when the compressor finally bites the dust, then I'd be tempted to simply keep on trucking until that day comes. I'm guessing he has electric emergency heat strips, so if the compressor dies during the winter, he should at least have a temporary (although expensive) backup heat option.
